MANN -- Katherine Mann, born January 13, 1952 in Oklahoma City, OK, passed away on May 1, 2006 at her home in Novato, CA, after a prolonged illness. Katherine was a therapist, a teacher, and a healer. She grew up in Los Angeles, attended West High School in Torrance, went on to Santa Monica City College and subsequently to UCLA, where she earned a Bachelor's, Masters, and a Ph.D. in Anthropology. She worked for the Oregon Health Department as a cultural anthropologist, but found that her true profession and talents were in psychotherapy. She entered the Wright Institute in Berkeley to pursue a Psy.D. degree, received a Master's Degree from that program, and was in the process of her doctoral dissertation when she was taken ill. During her predoctoral training programs, her clients often commented on her compassionate insightful presence and her talent for helping them toward a better life. Katherine was actively involved in Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Marin County. She began by volunteering to support the Monday night meditation group of Jack Kornfield, "holding the baskets". She joined the Family Council, and ultimately served on the Board of Directors for SRMC. She pursued integration of her spiritual practice and her professional practice, and catalyzed the formation of the Institute for Spirituality and Psychotherapy, which carries on that work. She is survived by her husband, Richard Mendius, of Novato, CA; her daughters, Courtney Mendius and Taryn Mendius; her son, Ian Mendius, all of Novato; and her son, James Gamez, of Atlanta, GA. She is also survived by her mother, Gladys Rebo, and her stepfather, Keith Rebo, of Salem, OR; her father, Robert Mann, and her stepmother, Evalou Mann, of Albuquerque, NM; her sisters, Barbara Flores of Albuquerque, NM, Pamela Mann of Bakersfield, CA, and Ramona Mann of Carson, CA; and her brother, Jeff Green, of Anchorage, AK. The Memorial will be held at Spirit Rock Meditation Center on June 21, 2006, at 1:00 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Institute of Psychology and Spirituality, 47 San Domingo Way, Novato, CA 94945, or to Spirit Rock Meditation Center (for either the capital campaign or scholarship fund), P.O. Box 169, Woodacre, CA 94973.
