She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 68 years, Roy Wilson Davidson; her parents, George and Josie Williams; brother, Mike Williams; and sister, Martha Atkinson. Her sister, Josephine McCoy of Las Cruces; children, Dorothy Sue Groth and husband, Eddie of Las Cruces, Mary Louise Overpeck of Santa Fe, John Philip Davidson of Raton, and Judy Carol Jones and husband, Larry of Tijeras, NM, survive her. Sue Catherine is also survived by her beloved grandchildren: Patty Ann Groth of Lake Havasu, AZ; David Edward Groth and wife, Lori of Albuquerque; Valerie Sue Pickett and husband, Mark of Las Cruces; Charles Davidson Overpeck of Herndon, VA; George Gentry Overpeck of Homer, AK; Dorothy Sue Sirrine and husband, Rob of Santa Cruz, CA; Joshua Quinn Davidson and Paige Anne Davidson of Denver, CO. Sue Catherine also has four beautiful great-grandchildren: Lauren and Connor Groth, and Wyatt and Whelan Sirrine. Sue Catherine was proud of the fact that she was born on the same day that New Mexico became a state. She was the fourth and youngest child of George Michael and Josephine Witt Williams: her father a rancher and her mother a teacher in Eddy County. Her parents had lived in the area since early 1890. Many happy times were spent fishing and picnicking on the Pecos River at the foot of Dagger Draw and around Lake McMillan. Frequent horseback treks were taken to Lakewood across McMillan Dam for refreshments, chewing gum, and soda pop. Sue Catherine graduated from Carlsbad High in 1929 during the Depression and was President of the Junior Chamber of Commerce. She then attended National Business College in Abilene, TX. On her return from Texas, she became a legal secretary for Caswell S. Neal, attorney, who later became Judge of the 5th Judicial District. In 1934 she took a year's leave to work in Santa Fe for the Superintendent of Public Instruction, who was her cousin, Georgia Lusk. On February 21, 1937, Sue and Roy were married in the First Methodist Church in Carlsbad. They eventually moved to Albuquerque where Roy worked for the Internal Revenue Service. On January 1, 1945, just as World War II was winding down, they moved to Raton. Sue was a member of the First Methodist Church where she sang in the choir, and taught Sunday school. She was active in PEO, Hesperian, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, Rainbow, and all school events in which her children participated. In 1971, Roy and Sue moved to Santa Fe while he served four years as Banking Commissioner under the Bruce King administration. Sue was involved in many social activities at the Governor's mansion with Alice King. The next 12 years were spent back in Albuquerque after which they returned to Raton when Roy retired. In 2002, Sue and Roy returned to Albuquerque to live in a retirement community. Sue Catherine's interests have been painting, gardening, sewing, and singing. Her paintings have won recognition as well as being featured recently in a one-woman show. She was always proud of her family, and was willing to tell anyone their exploits and achievements. She will be fondly remembered for the roles she so willingly and gracefully filled as homemaker, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Viewing will be held in Raton at the Yaksich-Long Funeral Home on Friday, May 19, 2006 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The Funeral will be held in Albuquerque on Saturday, May 20, 2006 at 1:30 p.m. at French Mortuary, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE.
