SUTCLIFFE -- Harry Sutcliffe, 82, died Thursday, April 6, 2006 at VistaCare Hospice of complications following surgery. He was born March 22, 1924 in Brighouse, Yorkshire, England to Seth Craven Thomas and Lily Hepworth Sutcliffe, who preceded him in death. The family moved to Glasgow, Scotland while Harry was a boy. He was educated there at Rutherglen Academy and later at the University of Glasgow, where he read economics and modern languages. Midway through World War II, he and his boyhood friend, Bill Kellie, together volunteered for the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm. Harry became an officer and flew as an observer in the Barracuda torpedo-bomber, serving in the North Atlantic and the Caribbean. Following the war, he transferred to the Royal Canadian Navy. Upon leaving the service in the early 1950s, he began a business career that would encompass banking, sales, and management consulting. In 1954, he married Rachael Sproule Porter in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and in 1965, they and their young family moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where they added to their family and happily settled for the next forty-odd years. Retiring in the early 1990s, Harry read, gardened (especially bonsai and espalier), flew with the Civil Air Patrol, enjoyed jazz (his era), socialized, and traveled to Canada, Germany, England, and, regularly, Ireland. And the twenty-first century brought grandsons--pure joy. Harry Sutcliffe is survived by his wife of fifty-two years, Rachael of Albuquerque and Erganagh, Co. Tyrone, Northern Ireland; son, Mark of Albuquerque; son, Christopher, currently of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; son, David and daughter-in-law, Patricia Casey and grandsons, Ian and Kieran, currently of Clifton, New Jersey; and sister, Jessie Burgess and nephews, Carl Sutcliffe, Paul, and Derek Burgess, and families, of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that those who would like to remember Harry do so with a memorial donation to their favorite charity. A Memorial Service for Harry Sutcliffe will be held May 13, 2006, 3:00 p.m. at French Mortuary, Wyoming Blvd. Chapel, Albuquerque, NM. French Mortuary, Inc. 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE (505) 823-9400
