GILMORE -- Vernon L. GILMORE (Lt. Col. USAF ret.) Col. Gilmore, formerly of Burns, WY and New Mexico, made his final flight on April 12, 2006 at the Colorado State Veterans Nursing Home in Walsenburg, CO. Col. Gilmore was born in Ulysses, NE on April 22, 1921 to Richard C. and Margaret (Donovan) Gilmore. He is survived by his daughter, Laurel L. Duhr of Albuquerque; son, Rodney F. Gilmore and wife, Judy of Houston, TX; granddaughter, Stephanie F. Umstead of Albuquerque, NM; and great-grandchildren, Kayla, Justine, and Nicholas Umstead, all of Albuquerque, NM. He is also survived by his sister, Betty J. Gilmore from the family home in Ulysses, NE and was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Eleanor Gilmore of Albuquerque, NM; and daughter, Janice M. Gilmore. Col. Gilmore's career began with service as a bombadier-navigator in World War II with the 8th Army Air Force. He went on to later retire as a reserve officer with the U.S. Air Force. His civilian employment included: Los Alamos National Lab, nuclear reactors in Kennewick, WA, as well as work in civil engineering throughout the southwest. Col. Gilmore enjoyed travel, meteorology and spending time with his dogs, Queenie and Tiny Tim. He was a well-read, self-educated man and an ongoing student. He will be greatly missed by his family and everyone who knew him. Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, April 18, 2006 in Seward, NE with burial following at the family plot at Bluevale Cemetery in Waco, NE. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that because of the Col.'s love of animals, that donations be sent to your local Animal Humane Association.
