EAKIN -- Donald W. Eakin, 87, resident of Albuquerque, peacefully joined the Lord on April 13, 2006, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on September 1, 1918, in Chicago, Illinois, and moved to Albuquerque in 1937 to attend UNM. He joined the Army Air Corps in 1940 and was assigned to the Pacific Theater as a B-17 pilot. Based at Pearl Harbor, he survived the Japanese attack of December 7, 1941. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received while flying a mission near Guadalcanal in late 1942. He was transferred to Letterman General Hospital in San Francisco, California, where he met and soon married his nurse, June Vogel Eakin. He was a B-29 instructor pilot at Pyote Base (near Pecos, Texas), and returned to Albuquerque in 1945 after separation from the Army Air Corps. He later retired from the Air Force Reserve as a Lieutenant Colonel. He started his real estate career in 1948 with P.F. McCanna. In 1954, he formed D.W. Eakin Company, a commercial real estate firm, and was a licensed broker until his death. He was preceded in death by his second wife of 23 years, Mary Cook Eakin, and his daughter, Jan Eakin Beary. He is survived by his son and business partner, Randy Eakin, and wife, Redd; his daughter, Lynne Clevenger, and husband, Larry; his loving friend, Rosalie Davis; twelve grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. His love and sense of humor will be missed by all who knew him. A Memorial Service will be held in Albuquerque on April 22 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Mark's-on-the-Mesa Episcopal Church, 431 Richmond Place, NE. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a memorial fund at St. Mark's Church or a charity of your choice.
