SANTLEY -- Robert S. Jr. Dr. Robert S. Santley, Jr. passed away on March 23, 2006 after a long illness. Robert was the 'Real Mesoamerican Archaeologist'. A professor of archaeology at the University of New Mexico for 28 years, he leaves an impressive legacy of research and publications on the archaeological record of southern Veracruz, Mexico. Born in Bethlehem, PA in 1948, he was the only son of professional musicians. He received his degrees in anthropology at Pennsylvania State University (B.A. '70, M.A. '74, Ph.D. '76) under the tutelage of Fred Matson and William Sanders. His path-breaking publication The Basin of Mexico: Ecological Processes in the Evolution of a Civilization (1979) remains required reading for students of Mesoamerican archaeology. But Santley was primarily a teacher. His undergraduate and graduate lectures were exciting, provocative and memorable not only for the information, but his love of challenging students on how to collect data and disseminate the information. He made it clear that archaeological research was a joint effort and he involved students in his work and validated their contribution through co-authorship. He will be remembered by his friends, students, and colleagues in a Memorial Service at the Frank Hibben Center, University of New Mexico on April 8, 2006 at 2 p.m.
