ASHE -- Valentine Leona Ashe was born January 31, 1918 and passed away February 3, 2006. Val was born in what was then called East New York, to Russian immigrant parents. Val did not speak English until she started school and then there was no stopping her. In 1940 Val married Michael Ashe and soon had two children, Julie Ashe and Peter Ashe. Then, in 1950, the family moved to a small Connecticut town where Val did the small town things; Sunday school teacher, Grange meetings, making ornate Halloween costumes for us, etc. Val surprised us all when, at 37, she decided to go to college. In June 1964 mom and I (Julie) shared a college graduation. Julie got a BS in Education and Val received a Masters Degree in Education. She then went on to teach high school English. In 1982 our parents moved to Albuquerque and all was good until our father died. Val had a hard time adjusting to being a widow and as old age problems set in, we realized she needed more care. We then found Mae Ocano's assisted living home and Val's last three months were spent there in a warm homey environment. Eventually New Mexico Hospice was called in and they too were exceptional in their care. Val died around 2:30am, Friday, February 3, 2006. Hospice nurses, Ron Bratton and Judy Kauffman, along with Mae, helped ease our pain in our mother's death. Mom was an animal lover and if anyone would like to make a donation in her name to the Animal Humane Association, 615 Virginia SE., Albuquerque, NM. 87108, she would be very pleased. Val has a nephew, Ron Patrick, and his family, in upstate New York. A memorial service is being planned.
