POWDRELL -- Mabel Powdrell, passed away on Saturday, June 11, 2005. She was 87 years of age. She was married to Mr. Jewell Powdrell Sr. "Sug" for 59 years. She was also the mother of Jewell Powdrell, Jr., Rio Rancho, NM; State Representative Jane Powdrell-Culbert, Corrales, NM, David Powdrell and Gregory Powdrell, Albuquerque, NM and Ronald Powdrell of Dallas, Texas. She was preceded in death by both parents; and six of her brothers and sisters; and one great -grandson. She has two sisters living, Archie Lee Johnson of Dallas, Tx and Luddie Harris of Nacogdoches, Tx. She was the loving grandmother of 21 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Mabel was very active in the South Broadway community. She was a community activist along with other community members who were instrumental via the City of Albuquerque in the development of the neighborhood's water and sewage treatment facilities, street paving, and Parent and Teacher Association activities at John Marshall Elementary School. She was also an avid supporter of Albuquerque High School's basketball and football teams. Long before the development of the Powdrell Barbecue restaurant business, Mabel was highly recognized for her cooking abilities through catering services for many of Albuquerque business leaders in the 1950's and 1960's. Mabel and her family became members of the Shiloh Baptist Church in early 1948. She was an active member of the missionary society and an avid supporter of the youth's baseball team. Mabel and her husband, Jewell, relocated to Olney, TX in 1979 where they became active members of the Rising Star Baptist Church, under Pastor Dave Autry. Visitation for Mabel will be on Wednesday, June 15, 2005 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Strong-Thorne Mortuary. Funeral service will be Thursday, 2:00 p.m., June 16, 2005 at Shiloh Baptist Church with the Rev. Dave Autry, Rising Star Baptist Church and Rev. Victor Wilson pastor, Shiloh Baptist church officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery. Strong-Thorne Mortuary 1100 Coal Ave. SE 842-8800
