HARWOOD -- Eugene Fredrick Harwood, born on September 26, 1927, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 26, 2005 after a long battle with emphysema. Gene was born in Santa Rita, NM and spent the majority of his life as a native New Mexican. He loved the state for the different opportunities that it possessed, the beauty of the desert, mountains, extremely blue skies, and pleasant weather. Gene joined the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of World War II. After receiving an Honorable Discharge from the Navy, Gene proceeded to work in Rocky Ford, Colorado, where he met his wife, Donna L. Harwood, of 57 years. Gene was blessed with a gift to use his creative mind coupled with his hands, to produce many works of art which entailed oil paintings, wood-working, and sculpture, making peoples homes beautiful through his work installing tile and carpet, and in his later years, his pride and joy, a rose garden. Gene's paintings are in homes and business establishments throughout the U.S. and England. Gene also loved trout fishing and hunting Indian artifacts, which he spent many hours doing with his family. His wife, Donna; son, Darryl L. Harwood and wife LaLayne; daughter, Gloria J. Walters and husband Kent; sister, Evangeline Scheider; and six grandchildren, Kelly King, Kari Kimbler, Wendy Strong, Dustin Walters, Jason Harwood, and Monte Harwood survive Gene. He would wish as well as the family, that this were a time of celebrating his life in the past and the future.
