BATES -- Jack H. Bates, 82, died on January 16, 2005 after a courageous battle with cancer. Jack was born in Adrian, MO and was a veteran of World War II, Army Air Corp. A consummate horseman, teacher, coach, animal trainer, and fisherman, Jack leaves behind a legacy of knowledge, character, ethics, and passion for learning. He lived each day doing what he loved and teaching others to do the same. He was graced with friends of the same character to his last days. For them, he and his family are blessed. Jack was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-four years, the beautiful Peggy McGraw Bates. He is survived by his three children, Dr. Jennifer B. Averill, Assistant Professor of Nursing at UNM, Jack H. Bates, Jr., a home remodeler in Poplar Bluff, MO, and Julianne B.
