GILBERT -- Elizabeth (Bettie) F. Gilbert, 81, died peacefully on December 17, 2004 at home on Bainbridge Island, WA. She was born to Arthur and Helen Frazier on December 31, 1922 in Providence, RI, the oldest of five children. She graduated with honors from Chester High School in Chester, MA. She attended the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI. While attending RISD Bettie had a radio show called "Bettie Buyer" where she advised folks on cooking and grocery shopping during WWII. She was married to Daniel C. C. Gilbert, architect, in 1944 and lived in New York City and Scarborough, NY. While raising a family she bought and sold antiques and eventually opened the Flintlock Farm Antique shop in Briarcliff Manor, NY. In 1971 she moved her family to Henniker, NH and bought and operated the Colby Hill Inn for 5 years before becoming the switch board operator at Concord Hospital. In 1989 she moved to Albuquerque, NM where she worked at New Mexico's Technical Vocational Institute and assisted hearing and visually impaired students with taking notes during class. She retired in December 2003. In July of 2004 she moved to Bainbridge Island, WA. Beginning at a very young age she wrote award-winning poetry and fiction. She was a fine painter, sketcher, and wood carver. She enjoyed helping others, especially children, bird watching, walking on the beach, and all the beauty that this planet holds. She loved traveling to Scotland and other parts of the world. She is survived by her brother, Richard Frazier of Coventry RI; her sister, Marion McNiff of Warwick, RI; her son, Daniel F. F. Gilbert of Wilmot, NH; her daughter, Tina H. C. Gilbert of Bainbridge Island, WA; her grandson, Aiden Gilbert of Henniker, NH; her granddaughter, Claire Koutras of Keene, NH; and many nieces, nephews, and surrogate children. She was preceded in death by her husband; her son, Arthur Gilbert of Concord NH; and brothers, Jack Frazier and Wesley Frazier, both of Providence, RI. She touched the hearts of all she met and will be remembered forever by all she knew. "She loved her life on this small planet." E. F.
