SALAS -- Catalina "Lena" Salas, a resident of Bernardo, NM peacefully joined our Lord and Savior surrounded by her loving family on Friday, January 14, 2005. She was born in Abeytas, NM to the late Andres and Ursula Abeyta on January 20, 1921. She was a member of the San Antonio Catholic Church in Abeytas, NM and a member of the Legion of Mary. She was a Eucharistic Minister and a member of the San Antonio Catholic Choir. Lena and her late husband, Albino, served as padrinos for the church serving many times throughout their married life. They were very active in all church activities and were always there as a team whenever they were needed. As one of America's greatest generation, Lena proudly served her country during WWII as a "Rosie The Riveter" reporting for duty with the U.S. Navy in Mare Island, CA in 1944. She returned home to Abeytas where she then married the love of her life, Albino Salas, in 1947. They went on to have 7 beautiful children, one of which died at birth. Her badge of honor was having 3 sets of twins which she took great pride in. She loved to garden and was an excellent seamstress and cook. She took great pride in her homemaking. Her family was her true pride and joy. Lena was preceded in death by her husband, Albino Salas, Jr.; four brothers, Monico, Tony, Juan, and Monico Abeyta; one sister, Bersabe Abeyta. She is survived by her six loving children, Terry and her husband, Eddie Barela of Bosque Farms, NM, Consie and her husband, Wilmer Gabaldon of Los Chavez, NM, Sandra and her husband, Elauterio Sanchez of Adelino, NM, Geraldann and her husband, Robert Caldwell of Las Cruces, NM, Geraldine and her husband, Rick Muniz of Stockton, CA, and Andrew and his wife, Martha of Bernardo; 20 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Petrita and her husband, Audilio Barela; two brothers, Greg Abeyta and his wife, Sylvia and Salo Abeyta and his wife, Doris; one sister-in-law, Louisa Abeyta. All services will take place at San Antonio Catholic Church in Abeytas, NM with a public viewing on Sunday, January 16, 2005 from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. with a Rosary to be recited at 2:00 p.m. with Ernesto Chavez and Helen Griego reciting the Rosary. A reception will follow at the home of Andrew and Martha Salas in Bernardo. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, January 17, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. with Father Dennis Dolter officiating. Interment will follow at the Abeytas Catholic Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Abeytas Fire Station. Pallbearers will be Elauterio Sanchez, Wilmer Gabaldon, Eddie Barela, Robert Caldwell, Rick Muniz, Martha Salas, and Louis, Carlos and Ronnie Sanchez. Romero Funeral Home, 609 N. Main St., Belen, NM.
