VANDERSYS -- Ethel A. Payne Vandersys died Thursday, December 16, 2004 in Albuquerque New Mexico at the age of 90. She was born in Shelby, Michigan on September 14, 1914, to Orin and Mabel Payne. She and her husband, James Vandersys, and her brother Sherman Payne and his wife Emille, moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico in February, 1942, to establish Santa Fe Nursery and Greenhouses. She worked side by side with her husband and continued to be involved in the business. They built a home, raised four children and supported them in their activities, were involved in the community, and especially loved having large family gatherings. Ethel is survived by her children; Sharon Mason of Albuquerque, NM; Richard Vandersys and wife, Patricia of Rio Rancho, NM; and Pam Adams and husband, Jay of Silver City, NM. She is fondly remembered as "Opoe" by twelve grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, James Vandersys in 1998, and by her son, James C. "Butch" in 1988. Memorial contributions may be made to Fairview Cemetery Preservation Association, P.O. Box 5958, Santa Fe, NM 87502. A memorial celebration of her life will be held Wednesday, January 5, 2005, at 10:00 a.m., at Christ United Methodist Church, 6200 Gibson Blvd. SE in Albuquerque, NM.
