LEWIS -- Delbert D. Lewis died at St. Vincent Hospital in Santa Fe, New Mexico on Sunday, December 26, 2004 at the age of 80. He was the beloved husband of Dorothy Welby Lewis and father of Thomas D. Lewis and wife Catherine of Vienna, VA, Delbert D. Lewis Jr. and wife Karen of San Antonio, Texas, and Lenee Pitts and husband Gerald of Emmett, Idaho. Mr. Lewis was born in Waco, Texas on June 16, 1924. He served his country in the Army Air Corps and the U.S. Air Force for over twenty years and retired as a Lt. Colonel. He served his country during the course of World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. In his retirement, he was a commercial airline pilot and private pilot. He earned a Bachelors degree in Public Administration from the University of Arizona 1974. As a resident of Santa Fe for thirty years, he was a nursing home administrator and owned Granada de Santa Fe nursing facility. He was also was a partner in Laundromats de Santa Fe. He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy M. Lewis. He survived by his brother Bobby Lewis and wife Alice of Del Rio, Texas and his sister, Suzanne Hanson of Russellville, Arkansas. His surviving grandchildren are Thomas Jr., Christine, Danika, Timian (1LT, USMC), Rebecca, Courtney, Erin and three great grandchildren, Jordan, Darian, and Jenna. He is also survived by his wife's children, Jane Despain and husband Darwin, John Welby and wife Vikki, James Welby and wife Michelle, Maryellen Mitschelen and husband Shawn, Daniel Welby and wife Kellie. He was a past commander of the Military Officer Association of America Santa Fe Chapter and the Military Order of the World Wars Santa Fe Chapter. He established the Sunbelt Patriotic Youth Leadership Conference, Inc. in 1998, an achievement of which he was most proud. Visitation will begin on Wednesday, December 29, 2004, 12:30 p.m. where services will take place at 1:30 p.m., at Berardinelli Funeral Home, 1399 Luisa St., Santa Fe. In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. Vincent Hospital Foundation, 455 St. Michaels Drive, Santa Fe, 87504, or to the Sunbelt PYLC, 1209 Placita Loma, Santa Fe, 87501. He was truly a grand man, a loving husband and father, and an aviator extraordinaire!
