DOYEL -- Monte Dean Doyel, age 66, died at home on December 3, 2004 after living an exciting and rewarding life. Born on August 14, 1938 in Hollis, Oklahoma he moved with his mother and brother to Albuquerque in 1951 when he was a junior high school student and immediately began his great passion for sports-discovering track and playing baseball, football and basketball. A member of Highland High School's class of '56, he lettered in three varsity sports each of his three years establishing the New Mexico high school pole vault record, which stood for numerous years. As a pole-vaulter for the University of New Mexico, he was the Skyline Conference champion-establishing a collegiate record. In 1961 he graduated from UNM with a BS in biology and chemistry; and, as he was about to be drafted, he accepted a five year commission in the United States Marine Corps as a naval aviator.
