ROEHL -- Jeanne Scott Roehl, 89, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, October 27, 2004. The daughter of a pioneer New Mexican family, she was born on July 15, 1915 in Clovis, New Mexico. Her father, James Foster Scott, M.D., was the first physician in Clovis. He would cover for W.R. Lovelace, who then practiced medicine in Fort Sumner before coming to Albuquerque and founding the Lovelace Clinic. Jeanne skipped one grade in middle school and finished college in three years, completing her course work for a B.A. from UNM in 1935 at age 19. She had been a student teacher at Albuquerque High at age 18 and was younger than some of her students. She was a violinist in the Albuquerque Symphony Orchestra. She initially taught school in Roswell and then at Lew Wallace Elementary in Albuquerque. She married Joseph E. Roehl on November 1, 1938. She sold advertising for the New Mexico Sentinel newspaper from 1938-40. She did post-graduate work at the University of Texas in Austin in 1943-44. She had been active in the Junior League of Albuquerque in the Forties and early Fifties and remained a Sustaining Member. For many years she had been a member of the Board of Directors of the Rehabilitation Center of New Mexico, for whom she did a survey in 1968 which resulted in the first state-supported Workshop for the Handicapped. She had also served on the Board of Directors of the Cerebral Palsy Day School and the Chaparral Girl Scout Council. In her later years, she was fond of raising and training champion Cairn terriers and was active in the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was blessed with so many wonderful friends, many of whom she had since her college years, including those in her long-time bridge and book clubs. "Mim" enjoyed playing games and story-telling with her grandchildren in their younger years, culminating in being "Madam Zelda," the gypsy fortune-teller, at her grandkids' Halloween parties. She was predeceased by her parents, James Foster Scott and Fannie MacMillan Scott; her sister, Ruth Scott Barton; her brother, Robert Scott; and her husband, Joseph E. Roehl. She is survived by her sister, Mildred Page of Clovis; her children, Jay, Jerry, and Ginger DePalma; and her grandchildren, Dan, John, KC, Matt, Ryan, and Taylor; and her daughter-in-law, Nancy. Special thanks to Theresa Lucero, her caregiver. Memorial services will be held at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 4020 Lomas Boulevard N.E. at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 30, 2004. Internment to follow services at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
