BOND -- F. L. "Roy" Bond left this life on October 8, 2004. He was a loving husband and father who was an exemplary role model for his children, and he will be cherished in our hearts forever. Roy was born in Junction City, Oregon on August 16, 1921 to Grace Smith and Roy Bond. He attended Glide schools until his graduation in May, 1938. After graduation he worked for the US Forest Service and attended Oregon State in the Forestry School, and he was a member of the Rowing Team both Freshman and Varsity. In 1942, he entered the Army and was accepted into Officer's Candidate School. In 1943, he was commissioned as a second Lieutenant, Field Artillery, in Fort Sill, OK. He spent time at Camp Roberts, CA and then was assigned to the 76th Field Artillery. From there, he was sent to England and Utah Beach, France; then he was sent to Belgium and the Battle of the Bulge. Next he was deployed to Germany and across the Rhine on the Remagen Bridge, and by May of 1945, he was in Czechoslovakia. In a staging area in Germany he was getting ready for the invasion of Japan, when the atom bomb was dropped. Before the War ended he had attained the rank of Captain, and he was awarded the Bronze Star and four Battle Stars. After WW2, Roy returned to the Forest Service and also decided to complete his degree. He graduated from Oregon State U. with a BS in Forestry. His first assignment was as a Ranger in Tiller, Oregon, but his career took him to New Mexico, Georgia, and Washington, D.C. where he served as the Deputy Chief of Resources until his retirement in 1979. Roy lived his life with dignity and moral conviction. His presence will live in our hearts, and his family takes great pride that he was ours during his time on earth. Roy belonged to Forest Service Retirees and was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church. He was also active in Masons and Shriners (the Unit of Greeters) and a member of Jesters, and many other organizations. Roy is survived by his wife, Thelma and four children Linda Gundiler and husband Abe, Bill Bond and wife Kathy, Bob Bond and wife Rita, Jerry Brown, and one daughter, Brenda, deceased. There are six grandchildren Wendy Foster and husband Jason, Karen Bond, Allison Bond, Steven Brown, Stephanie Brown and Justin Koch. Three Step-grandchildren Bryan, Dale, and Darrin Koch, and one great-grandson, Isaac Foster. Other survivors include: Vi Holmes, Betty Kopecky, Dorothy Gooch, Joan and Tom Montgomery, Curtis and Phyllis Crane. Services will be held at French Mortuary, Wyoming Blvd. Chapel on Wednesday, October 13, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. Roy will be buried at Santa Fe National Cemetery following the ceremony.
