PATTEN -- Iris Singos Patten. We are saddened to announce the death of our mother, a homemaker and entrepreneur, on March 27, 2004. She was born in Detroit, Michigan on March 17, 1928. She had lived in Albuquerque for more than 20 years. We loved our mother for her fierce determination. We loved her because she knew that a good Coney Island hot dog was worth driving for and that Greek olives cheese and bread made a good meal. We loved her for her Audrey Hepburn beauty. We loved her because when our half sister came to live with us, she accepted her as a whole member of our family. We loved her because she worked hard always, whether it was raising money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, peeling paint from doors in our old house, or stuffing envelopes at our offices. We loved her because she was proud of all our accomplishments, large and small, and frequently told us so. We loved her because she never wanted to bother anyone but always bothered to help. We loved her because she never stopped loving her nieces, nephews and sisters-in-law, even after she was separated from them by divorce. We loved her because she was brutally blunt and wildly opinionated, usually at the same time. We loved her because she could laugh at herself - and did almost every day. We loved her because she could be elegant in an evening gown but preferred a bathrobe. Most of all, we loved that she was our mother. Although she has left our presence, she will remain always in our memories. May God keep her and cherish her as much as she cherished us. She is survived by her son, Jon Patten and his wife, Julia of Albuquerque; her son, Micky Patten and his wife, Patty of Albuquerque; her son, Brad Patten and his wife, Christine of Phoenix; her daughter, Deirdre Patten Kowalski and her husband, Richard Kowalski of Chicago; and her stepdaughter, Caymichael Patten of New York City. She had four grandchildren (and one on the way), Sophia and Gregory Patten of Phoenix and Timothy and Andrew Patten of Albuquerque. She had four step-grandchildren, Louis and Jason Herman of Albuquerque, Austin and Christopher Kowalski of Chicago. Private services were held. Donations may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, 3300 East Sunrise Drive, Tucson, AZ 85718.
