PAYNE -- Mandona Hanchett Payne, 90, a resident of Albuquerque, died Tuesday, February 24, 2004. She is survived by her daughters, Rae Payne Mortensen, Ruth Payne Palmer, Mary Payne Hartman, and Judith Payne Meyer; sons, H. Vern Payne, Lloyd V. Payne, James B. Payne, John M. Payne and Roger L. Payne; 63 grandchildren; 134 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; brothers, Emmett Hanchett, James L. Hanchett, Myron Hanchett and Charles Hanchett; sisters, Raydene Cluff; and Lurlene James; and many other family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Judge H. Vearle Payne, sons, Jay R. Payne, Spencer L. Payne, and Donald M. Payne, three sisters, and 4 brothers. Mrs. Payne was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and her descendents have served more than 65 years of voluntary full time missionary service for the church in many countries around the world. She was selected as New Mexico Mother of the Year in 1997. Her husband was NM Speaker of the House of Representatives, a State Senator and a US Federal District Judge. Her descendants have served in many elective and appointed positions in the community and in their church. Mrs. Payne was also active in community service for children with disabilities and with unwed mothers. She served more than 15 years as the local President of the Women's Relief Society Organization for her church in New Mexico and many years as Ward Primary President directing the children's groups of her church. She loved children! Mrs. Payne also enjoyed quilting and gardening. When asked which of her 12 children she loved most, she would say the one that gone until they get home, the one that is sick until they get well, the one in trouble until its resolved. Friends may visit one hour prior to services. Services will be held Monday, March 1, 2004, 11:00 a.m., at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 11750 San Victorio NE, with Bishop Kendall Crookston conducting. Interment will take place Tuesday, March 2, 2004 in Virden, NM. Friends may also visit Sunday, February 29, 2004, at French Mortuary, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE, 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. French Mortuary 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE 275-3500
