SMITH -- John Adam Smith, age 72, lost his long and courageous battle with cancer on Sunday, February 22, 2004. John was born on February 12, 1932 in Hazleton, Pennsylvania to Raymond and Mary Renn Smith. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Renn C. Smith. Following graduation from high school in Hazleton, John joined the U.S. Air Force, serving four years during the Korean War. After his discharge in 1955, he attended Pennsylvania State University at the Hazleton Campus, receiving an associate degree in drafting. He was recruited by Sandia Laboratories in 1958 and moved to Albuquerque, where he remained the rest of his life. Following his retirement from Sandia Labs at the end of 1994 after 36 1/ 2 years of service, John pursued his hobbies of woodworking and traveling. John is survived by his loving wife, June, of the home; two sisters, Merry Hutton and husband, Eddie, of Conyngham, PA, and Betty Mangler and husband, Bill, of Fairfax, VA; three step-daughters, Susan Vosburg, Debra Poole and husband, Dan, and Vicki Paustian and husband, Jim, all of Albuquerque; nieces Mary Catherine Wolfe, Susan Sheer, and Allison Price of Conyngham, PA, Adrienne Mangler of Drums, PA, Cynthia Moisey of New Cumberland, PA, Carol Martin of Doylestown, PA, Mary Elizabeth Sides of Herndon, VA, Betty Ludington of Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands; and nephews William Mangler of Daytona, FL and John Mangler of Greenville, NC. John is also survived by four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, all of Albuquerque, and his two special sisters-in-law, Mary Miller of Wichita, KS, and Jean Wagner and husband, Cecil, of Orlando, FL. The family wishes to extend special thanks to the doctors and nurses at the New Mexico Cancer Center for their exceptional care and encouragement, and to the nurses at Vista Care Hospice who helped make his final days easier. Graveside services will be held Friday, February 27, 2004, 3:00 p.m., at Santa Fe National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Institute for Cancer Research, 1759 R Street NW, Washington, DC 20009.
