MCNIFF -- Monsignor James I. McNiff, age 93, passed away on February 10, 2004. He was born in Salem, Massachusetts on June 28, 1910 and came to New Mexico in 1936. He attended several schools and seminaries before he became a priest, including, St. James School, Salem, Mass., 1915-1923; Salem High School, Salem, Mass., 1923-1927; Boston College, Newton, Mass., 1927-1931 where he received his Bachelor of Arts Degree. He studied Philosophy at Boston College, Newton, Mass., 1930-1931 and at St. Charles Seminary, Columbus, Ohio, 1931-1932 and studied Theology at Mount St. Mary's Seminary, Emmitsburg, Maryland, 1932-1936. He was ordained a priest on February 16, 1936 and served at various parishes, including Assistant at St. Gertrude Church in Mora, NM, 1936-1938; Administrator at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Sapello, NM, 1938-1939; Assistant at Santa Rosa Church in Santa Rosa, NM, 1939-1941; Pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Villanueva, NM, 1941-1944; Pastor of St. Anthony Church in Dixon, NM, 1944-1948; Pastor of St. Anthony Church in Penasco, NM, 1948-1949; Administrator-Pastor of Our Lady of Sorrows in Manzano, NM, 1949-1954; Pastor of San Miguel Church in Socorro, NM, June 1954; Chaplain Junior Catholic Daughters of Socorro, 1964; Dean of Socorro Deanry; Liturgical Committee, 1964; Chaplain, Medical Missionary Sisters, SFE, Res. HIS, SFE; and Pastor at San Felipe de Neri, Albuquerque, 1969. In 1969 he was also the Director of the Archdiocese Priests Relief Fund. He retired October 1, 1976. Msgr. McNiff was preceded in death by his brothers and sister, He is survived by several nieces and nephews. Visitation for Msgr. McNiff will be held on Thursday at Salazar & Sons Mortuary from 3:00 p.m until 5:00 p.m. A Prayer Service will be held on Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. at San Felipe de Neri Church. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, February 13, 2004 at the San Felipe de Neri Church where the Mass will be celebrated at 8:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
