CHAVEZ -- Johnnie B. Chavez, 78, Born January 1, 1926, a lifetime resident of the Village of Los Ranchos died Saturday, January 10, 2004 after a two month struggle with complications from heart surgery. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Georgia Chavez; daughters, Loretta Smith and Yvonne Dominguez; sons, Robert and Ron Chavez; grandchildren, Kala, Tania, Christopher, Rhiannon, Dennise, Raquel, Ron, Ryan, Stephen, and Taylor; and great-grandchildren, Devin, Rosalinda, and Isabella; son-in-law, Dennis Smith and daughter-in-law, Theresa Chavez. Johnnie is also survived by brothers, Alfredo "Fecho" Chavez, Nick Chavez, Edward Chavez; and sister, Rafelita "Lita" Gallegos; and many nieces and nephews who loved him. He was preceded in death by brothers, Henry and Delfino Chavez. Johnnie was a member of an Historic New Mexico Hispanic family that has roots dating back to the late 1600s in Albuquerque's north valley. He served in the infantry during World War II, was wounded and awarded the Purple Heart. Johnnie worked most of his career as an Ironworker in local 495. Johnnie was an avid golfer and active member of Ladera and Yellow Freight golf associations, helping organize countless benefit tournaments aiding distressed families. Johnnie continually kept active in his retirement by his interest in computers, building and donating many to friends and family. He was loved by all and would always bring smiles to those he came in contact with. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends. May he now join the Lord and his deceased friends, "Cheo" and Ernie, in a heavenly eternal 18! A Rosary will be recited on Wednesday, January 14, 2004 at the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 9502 4th Street NW at 7:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, January 15, 2004 at the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Anthony Burns, Christopher Chavez, Ryan Dominguez, Robert Herrera, Randy Gallegos, and Daniel Chavez. Honorary Pallbearers will be Robert Jojola and Jason Chavez.
