PETERSON -- Donald W. Peterson, 78, died early in the morning of Dec. 12, 2003, with his immediate family at his bedside. A geologist and volcano expert, he worked for the U.S. Geological Survey. His research for his Ph.D. degree from Stanford University was conducted in the Superstition Mountains of Arizona. For many years he worked as Scientist-in-Charge of volcano observatories at Hawaii and Mount St. Helens. He had a lifelong passion for the outdoors, and was an avid hiker and birdwatcher. In 1997, after his retirement, he moved to Albuquerque. He and his wife joined the congregation of St. Paul Lutheran Church, where he was an enthusiastic choir member. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Betty Peterson; his daughter Karen Peterson and son-in-law Dwight Frankfather of Oak Park, IL; daughter Kristine Peterson and son-in-law Greg Ingwaldson of Albuquerque; son-in-law Stephen Herring of Tarboro, NC; and five grandchildren, Arwen Wilder, Vidrik Frankfather, Peter Herring, Julia and Derek Ingwaldson; his sister and brother-in-law Ruth and Norman Barker of Ireton, IA; and he was preceded in death by his youngest daughter Susan Herring. His memorial service will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1100 Indian School Rd. NE, at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 16. Memorials may be sent to St. Paul Lutheran Church or to the American Heart Association.
