IRBY -- James A. Irby, WWII Veteran and Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Texas-Pan American, left to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Monday, December 8, 2003. Dr. Irby was born June 12, 1920 to Ethel and Arthur Irby in Little Rock, Arkansas. He served the US Navy in the Pacific in WWII. Dr. Irby served with the Presbyterian Church, US as a teacher of missionaries' children in the Belgian Congo, now the Congo. There he met and married his wife, Mary McCann Hudson, on July 15, 1950. He earned a Master's degree from the University of Texas in 1953 and his PhD in History at the University of Georgia in 1969, specializing in Civil War History. He taught History at Pan American University in Edinburg, Texas from 1960 until his retirement in 1984. He had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed the company of his friends. His objective in life was to serve his Lord by serving others. He will especially be remembered for his generosity. He is survived by his wife, Mary Mac; son, Carl; brother, Robert and wife, Ora Mae of Dallas and their children, Karen, Peggy, Michael, and Robyn and brother, William of Huston and his children, James and Patti. Services will be held Thursday, December, 11, 2003, 10:30 a.m., at French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel. Interment will take place at 1:30 at Santa Fe National Cemetery.
