LOSACK -- Johnnie George Losack died on Saturday, October 11, 2003. Johnnie was born 4/3/25 in Orchard, Texas. He graduated from Orchard High School at one month into his 17th year. He joined the Marine Corps from 1941-1946 where he was selected, trained and served in the top secret Radar Technical program. He survived five landings in the South Pacific. Upon being discharged, he joined his family in Corrales. At age 21 he was employed by Wylie Brothers Construction Company where he did trucking for the first paving of Corrales Road. He graduated from the University of New Mexico in 1951 with an Electrical Engineering Degree. He worked at White Sands Missile Range where he served for twenty years on the programs of the initial missile launchings, which led to the landing on the moon. He returned to Corrales in 1978 to help his mother-in-law, Dulcelina Curtis, on the farm and orchards. He started getting involved with the Corrales Watershed in support of Dulce Curtis, who had been active in flood control, irrigation, and agriculture all of her life. From this beginning, he replaced her on the Corrales Watershed Board, was appointed by the Governor as the Southern Sandoval County Flood Commissioner. He also served approximately 15 years as an officer and/or chairman of the Central Middle Rio Grande Soil and Water Conservation District, which was later named the Cuidad Soil and Water Conservation District. He also served as state director for about five years. He was the assistant of Harvey Jones, who brought into being the Flood Commissioner position because of the increased flooding from the development of the western hills. Johnnie also realized that the job was too overwhelming for any volunteer. He tried to get AMAFCA to expand into the Rio Rancho and Corrales areas. They declined because this would involve them in Sandoval County. Johnnie labored, organized meetings, and presented the proposal of SSCAFCA to the state legislature. After eighteen months of planning, the authority was officially established and Johnnie was appointed the first chairman. He continued work and interest on all of these programs until he retired in 2000 after 22 years of volunteer service. He continued to work on the farm until his health no longer permitted such. His four children and their families have taken up that burden. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Salce Curtis Losack; daughter, Joneve Losack Bender, three sons - Mark, Lyle, and Vincent Losack; daughter-in-law, Veronica C de Baca Losack; son-in-law, Gary Bender; seven grandchildren, Jeffery and Carol Bender, Nicole Losack Freidt, Christopher, Lorin, Brandan and Garrett Losack; grandson-in-law, Arnell Freidt all from Corrales and Rio Rancho; sister, Leona Losack Jackson, brothers - Charles, Jimmy, Joe, Louis, and Donald Losack; brothers-in-law - Larry Jackson and Jack Phillips; sisters-in-law Georgia, Linda and Daisy Losack all from the Houston area, Dorothy Salce Curtis Trafton from Corrales; many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews from Corrales, Albuquerque, and the Houston area. Visitation will be held Tuesday, October 14th at San Ysidro Church in Corrales from 6-8 PM with the Rosary being recited at 7 PM. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Clarence Galli on Wednesday, October 15th, at San Ysidro Church in Corrales at 10:00 AM followed by internment at the San Ysidro Cemetery. A reception will be held at the Fellowship Hall at San Ysidro Church following the internment. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Johnnie Losack Scholarship Fund, c/o Charter Bank West Side Branch at 3761 NM Hwy 528.
