Hammar -- H. Gordon Hammar, 77, a resident of Albuquerque since 1971, died on Wednesday, August 19, 1998 from complications of renal failure and liver cancer. He was born in Pawtucket, RI on Monday, June 6, 1921 to Walter and Hazel Hammar. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Shirley Hammar of the family home; sons, Kevin Hammar and wife, Kathy, and Dennis Hammar; grandchildren, Joseph Brandt-Hammar and Elyse Brandt, and Christian A. and Caitlin S. Landskroener, and their mother, Nancy Landskroener, all of Albuquerque; mother, Hazel M. Hammar; sister, Arlene Weyrick both of Miami, FL. Mr. Hammar moved to Youngstown, OH as a young child. In 1940, before Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the US Army Air Corps as a private, and started a love affair with the Air Force. He had two tours of duty to Germany and one to Iceland. He met his wife, Shirley, an Army Nurse Corp Lt. while they were with the US Army during occupation in Germany in 1946. He taught many young Air Force mechanics the fine art of air craft maintenance. After his discharge from the Air Force as a Lt. Col, he was the owner and operator of Eddy/Hammar Hardware in Albuquerque until his death. He was an avid stamp collector and a lover of the Keeshound Breed of dogs. He was active in the Air Force Association, NM Philatelic Society, Reserve Officers' Association, the Retired Officers' Association, and the Albuquerque Humane Association. Services will be held Monday, August 24, 1998, 10:30 a.m. at French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel, 10500 Lomas NE, with Pastor Rick Donaho officiating. Interment will follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery, Santa Fe, New Mexico. Friends may visit French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel, Sunday, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Animal Humane Association of NM, 615 Virginia SE, Albuquerque, NM 87108.
