Maestas -- Gabriel Maestas, 72, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away on Thursday, May 7, 1998. He is survived by his wife, Mellie C. Maestas of 50 years; five children, Jo and Art Montano, Frank and Linda Maestas, Rita and Manuel Castillo, Gabriel and Christine Maestas, Ronnie and Donna Maestas; grandchildren, Artie, Manuel and Gina Montano, Rita Marie and Ramon Castillo, Crystal, Adrian, Monica, Vanessa, Vincente, Matthew Maestas, Sharon and Karen McCoy; great-grandchildren, Andrew Regine, Ramon Montano and Manuelito Castillo. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters, Juan and Fannie, Alex and Texann, Andres and Caroline, Bennie and Reina Maestas, Neme Baca, Lucinda Chavez, Petrita and Pedro Lucero, Maria and Donald Garcia, Ella and Don Hill, Dolores and Frank Lovato, Susie and Frank Segura, Inez Cambell, Pat and John Fuentes, Juan and Ramoncita Casaus, Delfin and Joann Casaus, Fabiolia and George Chicrella; and many nieces and nephews. Gabriel worked at Sandia Labs from 1965 to 1983. He retired and did what he always wanted to do, enjoy his ranching, and farming skills, open space was his love-he died outdoors using his tractor. He was everyone's love, he was very family oriented his family always came first he is our"HERO" our"SUPER DAD" he was always there when we needed him, always there to comfort us, and helping us with no questions, he had a great sense of humor. Gabriel was a husband, father, grandpa, brother, uncle, friend and loved by many people. Gabe served with the 515th military police battalion camp and control of traffic he guarded property in defense area against sabotage. He accepted custody of military personnel who had been apprehended by celian authorities. He was familiar with the use and care of all types of small hand weapons and techniques of hand to hand fighting in WWII. Pallbearers are Artie Montano, Manuel Montano, Ramon Castillo, Adrian Maestas, Stash Duran, Luis Lucero and Alex Campbell. Honorary pallbearers are Rita Marie Castillo, Crystal Maestas, Monica Maestas, Vanessa Maestas, Sharon McCoy, Karen McCoy, Vincent Maestas and Matthew Maestas. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 11:30 a.m. at the church. Interment to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Services are entrusted to Alameda Mortuary, 9420 4th Street NW, Gary F. Santillanes CFSP.
