Oakes -- Russell Curtis Oakes, 80, of Rio Rancho passed away on Thursday April 23, 1998. He was born August 9, 1917 in Western New York state. Dr. Oakes was educated at Cornell University, and received his E.D.D. from New York University in New York City. He taught high school for twenty years in Long Island, and for another twenty years, he held a full professorship in education at the University of New York at Geneseo, NY. A veteran, he served during WWII with the Navy and Merchant Marines. Following retirement, he and Mrs. Oakes settled in Rio Rancho in the mid-eighties. Survivors include, Dorothy Oakes, his wife of fifty-six years; his children, Margaret Oakes of Las Vegas, NV, Barbara Oakes of New York City, James Oakes of Perry, NY, Nancy Oakes and husband, Rick Cannon of Vermont, and John Oakes and wife, Danette of Medina, NY; and his grandchildren, Jesse Oakes Cannon, Sarah Oakes Cannon, Laura Oakes Cannon, Anna Oakes, and Elizabeth Oakes. Also surviving are his son-in-law, John Reynolds of Minnesota; his brother, James Oakes and wife, Nicky of Las Cruces, NM; and many other relatives and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Shirley Reynolds who passed away at the age of twenty. A memorial service will be held on Monday, April 27, 1998 at 3:00 p.m., at St. Paul's United Church, 2700 Rio Rancho Blvd., with the Rev. Dr. Richard Freeman officiating. In lieu of flowers a gift to a charity involving public education is suggested. Cremation arrangements are under the care of Sunrise Society (891-8200).
