Hughes -- Walter A. Hughes, 82, a resident of Albuquerque since 1946, formerly of Moriarty, NM, passed away suddenly Thursday, December 16, 1999. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Crystal Allen Hughes; his son, Stuart Hughes of Denver, CO; his daughter, Margaret Zahm and husband, Kim; and three grandchildren (of whom he was especially proud), Allyson, Adam, and Aaron, all of Albuquerque; his brother, Dr. Lloyd Hughes of Cedar Crest, NM; his brothers, Maurice Hughes and William Hughes; and sisters, Juanita Chappell, Lorine Arms, and Ruth Cook, all of Albuquerque; and many nieces and nephews. Walter was preceded in his death by his parents; his sister, Gertrude Lamb; and his brothers, Leon Hughes and Andrew Jackson Hughes. Walter was born on July 10, 1917 in Portales, NM, the fourth of ten children, to Walter M. and Effie L. Hughes. He graduated from Albuquerque High School in 1935, and served in the Army Air Corps in World War II. He retired from the US Army Corps of Engineers in 1973. He was an active member of Central United Methodist Church. He enjoyed many hobbies, including genealogy research, weaving, needlepoint, spending time at their cabin in the Jemez Mountains, and traveling in their motorhome. A memorial service was held on Monday, December 20, at Central United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Martha Singleterry and Dr. Charles Crutchfield officiating. Interment will be in the National Cemetery in Santa Fe. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to The Little Sunbeams Child Development Center or the Embroidery Guild, c/o Central United Methodist Church, the American Cancer Association, or the American Heart Association.
