Niemi -- Albert Jack Niemi, 80, a longtime resident of the Las Cruces, Truth or Consequences, New Mexico area, passed away Friday in his home following a lingering illness. Born in Progresso, New Mexico on January 17, 1919, Albert was a retired United States Army Technical Sergeant. A World War II Veteran, his awards include the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Campaign Medals, the World War II Victory Medal and the Combat Infantry Badge. He was a member of the Hot Springs Chapter of the Disabled American Veterans, and the Las Cruces Veterans of Foreign Wars. He is survived by two sisters-in-law, Doris Smitherman of Halfway, MO and China Niemi of Tucson, AZ; nieces and nephews include Leslie Niemi of Albuquerque, Kenneth Niemi of Halfway, MO, Mary Martin of Tucson, AZ, Tony Martin of Tucson, AZ, Pat Martin of Las Cruces, Josie Martin of Tucson, AZ, Lucy Mancuso of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Bettina McCaa of Monroe, LA, Wayne Morgan of Silver City, and Bennie Morgan of Johnson, KS. He will be deeply missed by numerous relatives and friends worldwide. Funeral services will be held at Graham Mortuary Chapel on Thursday, November 11 at 2:00 p.m. in Las Cruces, NM. Interment will be at Santa Fe National Cemetery in Santa Fe on Friday, November 12, 1999 at 1:00 p.m. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the Hot Springs Chapter of the Disabled American Veterans, 205 Smith, Truth or Consequences, NM 87901 in memory of Albert J. Niemi. Service arrangements are with Graham Mortuary, 555 W. Amador, Las Cruces, NM 88005.
