Lonz -- Thomas F. Lonz, 77, a resident of Albuquerque for 51 years, passed away Friday evening, February 26, 1999. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Maureen O'Rourke Lonz, of Albuquerque; sons, Steve, Thomas J. and wife, Gina and Gary, all of Albuquerque; daughters, Loretta Lonz of Lafayette, IN and Christine Gibson and husband, Alan of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Michelle, Timothy, and Patrick Lonz, and Craig, Christopher, Cameron and Elizabeth Gibson; several in-laws, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Lawrence Michael. Mr. Lonz was born September 4, 1921, to Clarence A. and Loretto C. Lonz and raised in Kokomo, IN. He was the first person to graduate from Purdue University in full military uniform. He also attended a specialized school of Military Intelligence at the University of Wyoming in Laramie. Mr. Lonz did graduate work at Catholic University and Johns Hopkins University. In World War II, he served as an interpreter for the 97th Infantry Division in Europe and as an instructor during the Pacific Campaign and the American occupation of Japan. As a member of the Catholic Church, he was a past president of the Holy Name Society and had been a member of the Knights of Columbus. He retired from Sandia National Laboratories in 1982 after 28 years of service. Tom and Maureen were planning to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary on April 19. The Rosary will be recited on Monday, 7:00 p.m. at French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel, 10550 Lomas Blvd. NE, with Deacon Sandy Hall reciting. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, March 2, 1999, 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, 4020 Lomas Blvd. NE, with Father Michael Cimino, Celebrant. Pallbearers will be Timothy Lonz, Patrick Lonz, Alan Gibson, Ferrell O'Rourke, Tim Dillon and Kevin O'Rourke. Honorary Pallbearers will be James V. O'Rourke, Art Brown, Steve Watkins, Carl Stratman, Carolyn Dillon, Patricia Lundgren, Mike Streich, Craig Gibson and Bruce Budagher. Interment will follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery. French Mortuary, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE.
