George -- Douglas R. George, 70, died early Friday morning, January 8, 1999. He was preceded in death by his father, Roland R. George; his mother-in-law, Elizabeth A. T. Stiles; his brother, Neil S. George; and his brother-in-law, Clair J. Eichinger Jr. He is survived by his mother, Goldie H. George; his sister, Nancy G. Eichinger; his wife, Judith T. George; his brother-in-law, William G. Tryon; his sister-in-law, Betty George his son, Nicolas K. George; and his nephews, Timothy, Terrence, and William George; Daniel, David, Douglas, John and Mark Eichinger and their wives and children. He was born in Minnesota, graduated from Saint Paul Central High School, and the University of Minnesota with degrees in Pre-med and American Studies. He studied and taught on a Fulbright Scholarship from 1958 to 1960 in Munich, Germany. He taught Art History and in the General Honors Program at the University of New Mexico for 31 years. He was also involved in teaching for many summers at the Ghost Ranch, for Elderhostel, and for the Southwest Institute. In 1990, he received the Humanities Service Award from the New Mexico Endowment for the Humanities for Distinguished Contributions to the Humanities in New Mexico. In 1994, he was the recipient of the University of New Mexico Alumni Association Faculty Award. He cherished beauty in all forms and regarded teaching to be a profession of the highest importance. An avid traveler, he spent many of his last years exploring the lands and cultures of the world. He will be sorely missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and students worldwide. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 6, 1999 at the Alumni Memorial Chapel on the University of New Mexico Campus. Friends will be welcomed at a gathering after the service in the second floor foyer of the Department of Art and Art History located in the Fine Arts Building on the UNM Campus.
