Goebel -- Morris Ralph Goebel-It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Morris Goebel, 76, on Saturday, January 2, 1999 at 1:40 a.m. Morris was born in Waco, TX, on September 30, 1922, married Virginia Haug of Waco in 1945, and moved his family to Albuquerque in 1953. In World War II he served in the U.S. Navy aboard the aircraft carrier USS Lexington in the Pacific arena. As a member of Torpedo Squadron 19, he piloted a Gruman Avenger Torpedo Bomber and flew numerous missions, earning the Silver Star and Navy Cross. He was also a navigational expert and the head of aerial photography. Morris retired from the Naval Reserves with the rank of Captain. He obtained a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Texas and worked for Sandia National Laboratories for 35 years, retiring in 1987. His greatest loves were aviation and fishing. Morris is survived by his wife, Virginia; daughter, Vicki; son, Don and his wife, Susan, all of Albuquerque; two grandsons, Cedar and Ian and their mother, Donna, all of Taos; also his elder sister, Lucille Ebeling of Hale Center, TX; and his two elder brothers, Harrington of Albuquerque and Marvin and wife, Elizabeth of Waco, TX. He was Uncle Morris to three nephews and one niece; and Uncle Junior to one nephew and five nieces, with a very special niece, Nancy Jane Ebeling of Albuquerque. He was preceded in death by his parents, Morris R. and Hester Goebel of Waco, TX; and his eldest son, Rod of Taos. Morris was a very special husband and father who stood by his wife and children. We could always depend on his love and support. He was our anchor, advisor, and fix-it-man. Some leave an empty spot in the heart. This beloved man leaves a Grand Canyon. We will miss him terribly. Cremation has taken place and Memorial services will be held at a future date. Interment will take place at Santa Fe National Cemetery.
