Carter -- Robert E. Carter, M.D., born July 14, 1923, Minneapolis, MN, died December 31, 1998, Albuquerque. He was a graduate of the Los Alamos Ranch School, received his MD degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School, returned to Los Alamos to conduct medical research for the Manhatten Project, did his residency at the University of Chicago in Pediatrics and Hematology. He was the recipient of numerous medical awards and honors, including the Markie Foundation Scholarship. He was Associate Dean at the University of Iowa Medical School; Dean and Director of the University of Mississippi Medical School; and founding Dean of the University of Minnesota-Duluth Medical School. He is survived by his wife, Lota (Chris) Ahrens Carter; brother, Theodore F. Carter; sons, Jonathan and wife, Marisa and David and wife, Anna; and daughter, Ann M.; grandchildren, Christopher, Rosemary and Allison. He is remembered as a distinguished pediatrician, medical educator, artist, philosopher, hiker and loving father and grandfather. Private services. Donations in his memory may be made to the Robert E. Carter Memorial Scholarship Fund, University of Minnesota-Duluth Medical School or to the New Mexico Symphony.
