Foushee -- Ralph Mitchell Foushee, 44, of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, once a resident of New Mexico, died March 14, 1999 in his home. A New Mexico memorial service will be held Saturday, April 17, 1999 at the University of New Mexico Alumni Chapel at 1:00 p.m. to celebrate Mitch's life and his love for New Mexico. Mitch Foushee was born August 14, 1954 in North Carolina. He graduated in 1976 from the University of North Carolina. It was in that year he came to New Mexico as a VISTA Volunteer, where he worked for the Small Business Administration on numerous minority business programs. He became the Executive Director of the New Mexico Minority Business Opportunity Council and completed his Masters of Public Administration from the University of New Mexico in 1978. Chosen to participate in the Presidential Management Internship in 1978, he left New Mexico for Washington, DC, where he worked at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and the United States Regulatory Council. He returned to his beloved New Mexico in 1982 and worked on the Senate campaign for Attorney General Jeff Bingaman. When Bingaman was elected to the Senate, Mitch Foushee was the first staff member hired and he helped build the Washington, DC Senate Office. He worked on a variety of national and state issues during his 13 year tenure with Senator Bingaman and he was especially involved in energy and environmental issues facing New Mexico. Since 1995, when he left his Senate position, he taught classes at UNC and worked on political campaigns in both North Carolina and Washington state. His last position was as the Director of the Human Rights campaign's ballot initiative for Washington state. Mitch often traveled to and throughout New Mexico. In addition to his family of friends throughout New Mexico and the world, he is missed by his parents, Ralph and Betty Foushee; his brother, Brent; and sister, Cindy. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pine Bluff Methodist Church, or the hospice or AIDs support organization of your choice.
