Stevens -- LCDR Elvin L. Stevens, USN, Ret., passed away on Tuesday, March 23, 1999 in Olathe, Kansas. Elvin, age 87, was a 30 year US Navy Veteran, a member of the American Legion, the Retired Naval Officers Association. Among his many military service commendations are The American Defense (with"A" Clasp), American Theater, European-African Theater with two stars, WWII Victory, Korean Services Medal, United Nations Ribbon, and National Defense. Elvin enjoyed bowling, gardening and reading. Prior to moving to Olathe in October 1998, Elvin and his wife, Clarice were longtime residents of Albuquerque, where Elvin retired from the Navy in 1962. While in Albuquerque, Elvin was an active member of University Heights United Methodist Church where he served as usher, board member, and a church trustee for over 45 years. Elvin and his wife were also dedicated volunteers for 25 years at the Storehouse, a charitable outreach to the homeless of Albuquerque. Elvin was preceded in death by his parents, Elvin and Libby Saffel Stevens; and one sister, Orpha Stevens. Mr. Stevens is survived by his wife, Clarice; daughters, Lydia Rodgers and Kathie Goodrich; grandchildren, Kim Glasgow, Sami Hobbs and Brian Rodgers and great-grandchildren, Kaitlin and Kendall Glasgow; two brothers, Jerry Stevens and Neil Stevens; one sister, Lilly Beck. Mr. Stevens will be remembered as a man who knew God, loved God, and trusted God; a man who loved and served his church, his family and his country. A visitation will be held today, Friday, March 26, 1999, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., in the chapel of Vista Verde Mortuary, Sara Rd., at Meadowlark Ln., Rio Rancho. The service will be tomorrow, Saturday, March 27, 1999, 2:00 p.m., at the University Heights United Methodist Church, 2210 Silver Ave., Albuquerque, with the Rev. Jon Foster officiating. Organist will be Marjorie Mather. Entombment will follow in the Patriots Mausoleum in Vista Verde Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Michael Martinez, Marvin Martinez, Don Hancock, Chuck Hughes, Richard Lepp, and Robert Morris. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the New Mexico Veterans Memorial have been suggested. Arrangements by Vista Verde Mortuary, Rio Rancho.
