Stevens -- Betty Stevens peacefully passed into the arms of the Lord at home on April 15,1999, surrounded by her loving family. Betty was born April 5, 1916 in Greeley, Colorado, the youngest of six children of Sarah Frances and William Carson Gilbert. She graduated from Stephens College, then continued her education at the University of Illinois, where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1938. She married her high school sweetheart, Don Stevens, in Greeley, Colorado on October 2, 1938. During the early years of her marriage, they resided in Denver, Colorado; Champaign-Urbana, Illinois; and Austin, Texas. In 1948, when Don left his teaching position at the University of Texas, they moved to Albuquerque, where Don joined in partnership with Gordon Ferguson in the architectural firm later to become Stevens, Mallory, Pearl, and Campbell. As a devoted mother, Betty spent countless years as a Scout leader, roommother, and in PTA. She served on the boards of AAUW, Visiting Nurses and Community Concert, and was active in Civic Symphony and Community Chest. She also held many offices and enjoyed special friendships through PEO, Collectors and Old Glass Clubs. She was a member of St. Mark's-on-the-Mesa Episcopal Church, where she served faithfully on the altar guild and as wedding coordinator for many years....taking great pride in the beautiful church designed by her husband. Betty was the most loving, devoted, thoughtful, kind and generous wife, mother, grandmother and friend. An inspiration to all in her valiant fight against pain and illness, she will always be remembered and greatly missed by all whose lives she touched and enriched. She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Don, whose"privilege it was" to unselfishly and tenderly care for her during her lengthy health problems; by their five children, Nancy Comprelli and husband, Frank of Moraga, CA, Mary Gadeken and husband, Arlan of Kennewick, WA, Phil Stevens and wife, Lynda of Albuquerque, Gail Turner and husband, Harry of Oak Harbor, WA, and Mark Stevens of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Karen Snook and husband, David, Cathy and Cindy Comprelli, Cheryl Cuillier and husband, David, Lisa Gadeken, Lynne Evans and husband, Shane, Tracy, Shelley and Stephanie Turner, Jennifer Sanford and husband, Jeff; and step-grandchildren, Jamie and Greg Stevens; great-grandchildren, Paul and Lauren Cuillier, Evan Sanford; and step-granddaughter, Alexa Stevens; brother, Bill Gilbert and wife, Marion; sister, Virginia Saale; in-laws, Rod and Nan Stevens, Becky Gilbert and Fran Gilbert; and a multitude of nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at St. Mark's-on-the-Mesa Episcopal Church (431 Richmond NE, Albuquerque) on Saturday, April 24, at 2:00 p.m. Internment arrangements made by Sunrise Society. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Albuquerque Christian Children's Home (5700 Winter Haven NW, Albuquerque, NM 87120)...for which a special fund has been created in Betty's honor, for the purpose of providing cultural enrichment for the children. The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation and thanks to the many special friends, neighbors, and Rev. Jud Wagg who provided encouragement, prayers, and countless acts of kindness, and for the tender loving care and support provided by Lovelace Hospice and numerous other medical providers.
