Groves -- Robert Chapman Groves, 54, a resident of Las Cruces since 1981, formerly of Albuquerque, died Thursday, January 13, 2000 at home. He is survived by his wife, Judy of 34 years; his daughters, Guenevere (Genni) and husband, Charles McMahon, Aleta (Ali) and husband, Brian Robertson; grandchildren, Spenser and Dru Lopez, Savannah and Hugo Robertson, all of Las Cruces; parents, Ken and Ruth Groves of Albuquerque; brother, Ken Groves and his wife, Bethany Cope of Oakland, CA and Rutheron, NM; mother-in-law, Ruth Davis of Las Cruces; and sister-in-law, Kathryne Davis of Albuquerque; many nephews, nieces, aunts, uncles, cousins, and loving friends. He was born in Dallas, Texas on July 13, 1945 and moved to Albuquerque in 1951. He graduated from Manzano High School in 1963 after which he served with distinction in the Albuquerque Police Department until 1972. He was a former member of the Ballut Abyad Pipe Band in Albuquerque and loved playing the bagpipes and listening to Scottish music. He graduated from New Mexico State University in 1992 with a BA in Sociology and with an Associate Degree in Nursing in 1996; he was licensed as a Registered Nurse in January, 1997. He held the position of Nurse Administrator at the Lovelace Medical Clinic in Las Cruces prior to his death. He served in both the U.S. Army Reserve and U.S. Coast Guard Reserve before being Honorably Discharged in 1975. He was a World War II history buff, and a prolific reader, writer and artist, specializing in pen and ink. He will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Graham's Mortuary in Las Cruces; Memorial services to be held at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 517 North Alameda Ave., Las Cruces, on Monday, January 17, at 3:00 p.m. Honorary pallbearers will be Gary and Caroline Harrington, Neida Courtney, Brendalyn Batchelor, Bill and Ross and Chuck Lewis. The family has requested, that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Mesilla Valley Community of Hope, 999 West Amador Ave., Las Cruces, NM 88005, in the name of Robert Groves.
