Romero -- Romana Romero, 94 who was born in La Garita, Colorado on April 15, 1905, passed away peacefully at home in Chimayo on January 8, 2000. Ramona who was the cherished matriach of five generations is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth (Betsy) Martinez and husband, Ben (Ramona's beloved son-in-law who she lived with for the past 21 years); three sons, Dr. Isaac Romero and wife, Jean of Glendora, California, Ambassador Edward L. Romero and wife, Cayetana currently assigned to Madrid, Spain and Gregory Randy Romero and wife, Mary Ann of Albuquerque. She is also survived by fifteen grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Ramona was a Democrat, active politically all of her life. She was the first Hispanic woman delegate from Colorado to a National Presidential Convention. She was Precinct Chairwoman for 35 years in Alamosa, Colorado. Among Ramona's most cherished memories were meeting President Carter and President Clinton and Vice President Al Gore, but at the top of her life's joys was being selected with her son, Edward as one of ten people in the official party to accompany Vice President Al Gore to meet and bid farewell to Pope John Paul II on his departure from Denver after this visit there. Ramona was the beloved aunt of many nieces and nephews and leaves many friends in Chimayo and Espanola. Ramona was preceded in death by her husband, Isaac Romero; and three grandchildren, Issac (Ikie) Martinez, Troy Romero and Terri Romero. A Rosary is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. Monday, January 10, 2000, at the Holy Family Church in Chimayo. Mass of the Resurrection will follow the Rosary at 10:00 a.m. also at Holy Family Church. Interment will follow at the Alamos Cemetery in Alamosa, Colorado. Serving as pallbearers will be: Dr. Robert Martinez, Ron Martinez, Tom Romero, Tim Romero, Steve Romero, Andres Romero, Joaquin Romero and Isaac Daniel Martinez. Named as Honorary pallbearers are: Joaquin Martinez, Adam Romero, Jose Frietze, Pete Harrod, Steve Sneddon, Jonathan Salazar and Jack Spaun.
