Baker -- Leslie F. Baker passed from this world to his final home on Sunday, February 24, 2002. Born on the Zugg Farm in Sabetha, Kansas on October 7, 1923, he was 78 years old. He died quickly and peacefully at the family home. He served in the army in World War II in the medical corp., where he attained the rank of lieutenant. Les was the founder of Baker Construction Co. in 1954, and was well known and respected within the commercial building community. He served twice as the president of the New Mexico Building Branch of the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC), and was a national representative to AGC, serving on several committees as delegate and chairman. Les was awarded AGCs highest honor, the SIR award for his Skill, Integrity and Responsibility. He also served selflessly for the State of New Mexico as chairman of the State Labor and Industrial Committee. Les was the youngest of eight children of Dora and Perley R. Baker, and grew up in southeast Colorado and northwest Kansas. He was survived by his wife of 34 years, Charlotte; children, Michael Baker and wife, Karen, Deborah McLaughlin and Alison Baker; sisters, Audrey Jones and husband, Ralph, Lois Johnston and Hazel Stormo and husband, Virgil; as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, all of whom enjoyed his quick wit and generous personality. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Debra Mauney; grandson, Rob Baker; three sisters; one stepsister; and one brother. People who knew Les would describe him as a good, honest, straightforward man with a wonderful sense of humor. A voracious reader, he enjoyed all types of novels, articles and nonfiction and was literate in many subjects. His whole family will miss him greatly. There's a piece of all of us thats missing now, but we are the better for our life and experiences with Les Baker. Services will be held, Wednesday, February 27, 2002, 2:00 p.m. at French Mortuary-Wyoming Blvd. Chapel, 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Baker Morrow, Michael Adams, Timothy Dosch, John Adams, Gary Gibson and Eric Wabel. Friends may visit French Mortuary, 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE, Tuesday, February 26, 2002, 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
