Werner -- Robert G. Werner, 90, died June 6, 2002 in Brookings, OR, where he resided with his daughter and son-in-law, following a long illness. Mr. Werner was born June 11, 1911 in New Orleans, LA, a son of Albert and Anna Werner. He was raised in New Orleans and graduated from Warren Easton High School at the age of 16. He attended Tulane University and Loyola University in New Orleans graduating from Loyola in 1936 with a B.S. in physics. Following college, Bob taught physics and mathematics for two years before accepting a position as a junior physicist and cement inspector with the U.S. Bureau of Standards from 1937-1940. On August 27, 1938, he and Louise Gardner were married in San Antonio, TX where they made their home until transferring with the Bureau to Everett, WA, then Washington, D.C. Bob served as a radio engineer with the Signal Corps, War Department in Washington, D.C. from 1940 - 1942. In August, 1942, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in the U.S. Army Air Corps (later the U.S. Air Force). He served as a procurement planning officer in Airways and Air Communications Service and technical advisor/radio engineer in the Air Force where he determined requirements for communications and navigational aids. He medically retired as a Lt. Col. in August of 1952. Bob's service to his country took him to many areas of the world including China, Africa and Guam. Bob was employed as a plans analyst with the U.S.A.F. Security Service at Medina Base in San Antonio, TX from 1952-1956. He then worked as a physicist/engineer with the Atomic Energy Commission at Sandia Base, Albuquerque, NM from 1956 until July 24, 1967, when he retired from civil service. Following retirement, Bob moved to Conchas Lake, NM where he was active on the water board and in the Lion's Club until 1997 when he moved to Irvine, CA to reside with his daughter and son-in-law, Bobbie and Dan Aldinger. He moved to Brookings, OR in 2001 with Bobbie and Dan. Bob enjoyed fishing, golfing, and hunting in his earlier years. He also showed chow dogs. He was an excellent bridge player and taught the game to others. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Devine, TX and had received his 50 year pin in 1995. While living in Albuquerque, Bob was active in the Shriners. He was a past member of the American Legion. He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Bobbie and Dan Aldinger of Brookings and Rhonda and George Berkopec of Clovis, NM; a son and daughter-in-law, Albert"Pete" and Dusty Werner of Conchas, NM; ten grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise, March 1, 1968; and a brother, Albert. A Memorial Service will be held September 17, 2002 in Devine, TX.
