Stevens -- Nan M. Yeager Stevens, 94, was honored on Sunday, July 28, 2002, when her Lord and Savior whispered her name to rejoice in Heaven as she rejoiced on earth. Nan was born Nannamae Yager in Weatherford, TX, February 10, 1908, to Alvis and Edna Cox Yager. (The spelling was changed to Yeager in the late 1920s.) Nan graduated from Bonham High School, Bonham, TX, in 1927, and continued her education through enrollment at the College of Industrial Arts, Denton, TX, later known as Texas State College for Women, and now Texas Woman's University. She graduated in 1931 with a major in Library Science, which led to her first job as a librarian at Borger High School, Borger, TX. Her monthly salary compensation was in the form of merchant vouchers as a result of the depression. Nan met James Dillard Stevens (Sr.) in Borger, and they were married in 1933. She taught Spanish, Latin, Geography, and Arithmetic at various Texas schools as she traveled where Jim's jobs took them. Jim's employment with the Army Corps of Engineers took them to the Panama Canal Zone during WWII. Nan Found employment with the Canal Zone motor vehicle office as an interpreter of Spanish/English and with the Canal Zone school system as a substitute teacher of Spanish. The Stevens family returned to the US in 1950, locating in Albuquerque. Nan was employed by the Department of Air Force as a Scientific and Technical Librarian assigned to the Air Force Weapons Laboratory, Kirtland AFB, until her retirement in 1973. Nan was a member of the Adah Chapter No. 5, Order of The Eastern Star, and Daughters of Nile, Yucca Temple #74. Nan was preceded in death by her husband, Jim in 1996; sons, Larry in 1989 and James D. Jr. (Jimmie) in 2001. Nan is survived by one brother, Alvis Leeman (AL) Yeager, and wife, Esther of Paris, TX; two sons, Leeman Stevens and wife, Patti Manassas of VA; Stephen E. The family thanks the Lovelace medical staff who cared for Nan so tenderly during her final weeks. A special appreciation to Dr. Charles Benton, Lovelace Health Services for many years of exceptional care. Nan was small in stature, a gentle and quiet woman, a woman of inner beauty, a woman with a big heart full of love and compassion. Integrity and selflessness were tenets by which she lived; she harbored no prejudices and prayed for peace and harmony. We will miss her inspiration, wisdom, strength and humor.
