Corner -- Cecil Corner, 90, died Tuesday, October 22, 2002, in Los Alamos, NM, after a long and healthy life. Born April 2, 1912, in Leeds, England, ninth in a family of ten children, Cecil left for New York in 1930. He graduated from Cooper Union with a degree in architecture in 1934, became a U.S. citizen in 1937, and married June Fox in 1938. Cecil served as a staff sergeant in the Army Corps of Engineers during World War II. His unit was part of the planned invasion of Japan until the dropping of the atomic bomb made that unnecessary. After discharge in 1946, he returned to his career with the U.S. Civil Service, which over the course of 30 years took him and his family from New York City to Sacramento, CA; Kodiak, AK; Little Rock, AR; Buffalo, NY; and then to Albuquerque in 1956 where he put down roots. He fell in love with the Southwest, and after retirement in 1972, he started painting its vibrant colors, bold forms, and muscular horses. He and June celebrated 60 years of a loving marriage before she died December 31, 1998. He moved to Los Alamos a year later to be close to his only child, Dorothy and son-in-law, Anthony Amsden. During his three years in Los Alamos, he published his memoirs, A Yorkshireman's Odyssey, and had several exhibits of his oil paintings. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held at Sombrillo Nursing Home in Los Alamos on Wednesday, October 30, at 10:30 a.m.
