Maestas -- Martha Ortega Maestas, 91, a long-time resident of Albuquerque, passed away peacefully November 8, 2002, in her home after a long and fruitful life.¯She was born in Chimayo, New Mexico, the third of five children to Nicasio and Virginia Trujillo Ortega, a world-renowned family of weavers.¯Martha is a graduate of Loretto Academy in Santa Fe and St. Joseph College in Albuquerque.¯She became an elementary school teacher, teaching primary grades in both Santa Fe and Rio Arriba Counties and the Albuquerque Public Schools for many years.¯She was an outstanding educator and dedicated her life to her students and to her family. She is preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Sigfredo Maestas, and two brothers, Jose Ramon and Richard Ortega. She is survived by her three children, Olivia Rivera and husband, Jerry of Albuquerque; Eli Maestas of Albuquerque, and Albert Maestas and wife, Mary from Tulsa, OK.¯She had 6 grandchildren whom she loved dearly: Victor Maestas and wife, Lavone of Placitas, NM, Michael Maestas and wife, Gabriella of San Francisco, California, Thomas Maestas of Albuquerque, W. Gary Rivera and wife, Kate of Albuquerque, Elizabethann de Leon Maestas and Jeanine de Leon Maestas of Tulsa, Oklahoma; her brothers, David Ortega of Chimayo and Medardo and wife, Jenny of Albuquerque; along with many nephews and nieces.¯She was dearly loved by her family and her life was a wealth of contribution to others.¯Mass will be celebrated Monday, 1:30 p.m. at St. Charles Catholic Church, 1818 Coal Pl SE, with Father Robert Chabot, SSS, Celebrant. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul NE.¯Friends may visit French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel for a viewing at time of rosary.¯¯
