Cornell -- Murray J. Cornell, age 89, passed away on March 13, 2001 after an accident in his home in Denver CO. He had been a resident of Albuquerque and Santa Fe since 1936. He and his brothers Abraham B. Cohen and Walter E. Cohen were the founders of Pay Less Drug Store, Inc. They were pioneers of the concept of self-service discount department-drug stores. Walter joined Murray and Abraham in the Pay Less business after his service in World War II aboard a hospital ship. When Pay Less Drugs merged with the nationwide Walgreen Drug Co., Murray returned to Denver, CO where he owned and operated Cornell Prescription Pharmacies. Murray retired in 1992. He continued to supervise his properties in Santa Fe. Murray is survived by one daughter, Jeanne Rochelle Cornell of Albuquerque; one son, Dr. Lanny Cornell and his wife, Catherine of El Cajon, CA; three granddaughters, Deborah Jean Davis and her husband, John of Albuquerque, Lannette Rochelle Bloom and her husband, Todd of La Jolla, CA, Kendall Lynne Dann and her husband, Scott of El Cajon, CA; two great-granddaughters, Alesse Bloom, Melissa Bloom; one great-grandson, David Louis Dann; one sister, Zelda Gutman of Denver, CO. He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Abraham and Walter Cohen, two sisters, Rita Feldman of Detroit and Elsie Katz of Albuquerque. In lieu of flowers, contributions should be made to Jewish Family Services, 5850 Eubank Boulevard NE, Suite B-32, Albuquerque, NM 87111. Graveside Services will be held Friday, March 18, 2001 at 12:00 noon in the Fairview Cemetery on 700 Yale SE. Rabbi Joesph Black will officate. The arrangements for Murray Cornell are under the direction of Strong-Thorne Mortuary.
