Bell -- Capt. Gordon Colman Bell, USN, Ret., a resident of Albuquerque since 1970. He was born on September 21, 1918 in Tullahoma, Tennessee and passed away on Saturday, June 23, 2001, in Albuquerque, NM. Gordon is survived by his wife, Elinor; daughter, Joy Bell Tauber, both of Albuquerque; brother, William, and wife, Ann of Carriere, MS; sister, Anita Banks, and husband, Arthur of Bristol, TN; brother-in-law, Frank Horan of Collinsville, IL; nephews, Allen Bell, Michael Bell, Jeff Glover, and Mike Horan; and nieces, Ruth Ann Fuqua, Marty Acedevo, Kathy Finney, and Mary Ann Getz. He was preceded in death by his son, John Gordon; father, Estil; mother, Annie; sister, Louise Horan; and mother-in-law, Helen Powers. Gordon was a career officer in the Medical Service Corps of the U.S. Navy for over 20 years. During World War II he was a gunnery officer aboard the battleship, USS Texas. He was on the board the Texas at the Invasion of Normandy off Omaha Beach. He later served as Radiological Safety Officer during the building and commissioning of the first nuclear aircraft carrier, USS Enterprise. After retiring Gordon served on the Air Force Inspector General's Team at Kirtland Air Force Base. He was a longtime member of the Heights Christian Church, Albuquerque, NM, where he sang in the choir and served as an Elder. He also served as a trustee of El Paso Christian College, El Paso, Texas. He was active in the Christian Men's Association. Gordon was a graduate of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, CA. A memorial service will be held at the Heights Christian Church, corner of Comanche and Louisiana, 10:00a.m., Monday, July 2, 2001. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be given in Gordonťs name to the Heights Christian Church.
