Benson -- Zona Mae Benson, 83, beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend passed away Monday, September 3, 2001. Zona, a member of Grace Baptist Chapel, loved flowers and was an avid gardener. Zona worked hard to make her life and the lives of the people around her beautiful. Through her example, she gave many people inspiration. She was a soft spoken, gentle woman who dedicated her life to her family. Her strength and her sense of humor shined through to the very lasts second of her time on earth. Her family is comforted by her legacy of love. She came to Albuquerque 40 years ago from her home state of Oklahoma. She graduated from Mill Creek High School in 1937, where she was the Valedictorian of her class. She continued her education at East Central State College in Ada, Oklahoma and graduated in 1943. Zona taught for over 30 years in both Oklahoma school systems and the Albuquerque Public School system. She concluded her career at Acoma Elementary School in Albuquerque. She is survived by her children, Pam Wylie and her husband, Marshall of Albuquerque; son, Greg Benson and wife, Katie of Albuquerque; granddaughters, Nikki Feltz and her husband, Martin of Castle Rock, CO; Michelle Benson of Albuquerque; and her sister, Lois P. Chapman of Ardmore, Okla. A viewing will be held Wednesday, September 5, 2001 from 5:00 p.m. -7:00p.m. at French Mortuary, Lomas Chapel, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE. Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 6, 2001, at 1:00 p.m. at French Mortuary, Lomas Chapel, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE, with Pastor Curtis Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Grace Baptist Chapel or Lovelace Hospice.
