Velarde -- Tony S. Velarde, 79, a 50-year resident of Albuquerque, died Monday, October 8, 2001 after a long illness. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sarah M. Velarde of the family home; sons, Steven Velarde and wife, Linda and Joe Velarde and wife, Margaret, all of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Steven Velarde, Kenneth Velarde, Michelle Velarde, Candace Hale, Tonya Hale, Elena Silva-Velarde, and Melanie Silva-Velarde; brother, Max Velarde and wife, Bernice of Casa Grande, AZ; sister, Carolyn Smith of Casa Grande, AZ; brother, Lambert Velarde and wife, Maria of Flagstaff, AZ; sister Rose Martinez and husband, Joe of Bellflower, CA; and numerous nephews, nieces, and Godchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Johnny, parents, Simon and Genoveva Velarde and brother, Ernest Velarde. Tony was born in Roy, NM. He graduated from high school in Mosquero, NM. Tony then attended New Mexico A&M (NMSU) in Las Cruces. He married Sarah Mascarenas March 6, 1945. They shortly afterwards moved to Santa Fe and then to Albuquerque where he resided until the present. Tony worked as a geologist, throughout New Mexico with the Corps of Engineers and later with the Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation. He retired in 1980. Tony was a member of the Knights of Columbus and St. Vincent de Paul Society at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church in which he was very involved. Tony had a true love for life and his grandchildren. Rosary will be recited Friday, October 12, 2001, 7:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE, with Sophia Gurule reciting. Mass will be celebrated Saturday, October 13, 2001, 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church, Lomas at Tennessee, with Father Michael Cimino, Celebrant. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Al Sanchez, Richard Jones, Michael Velarde, Gilbert Jefferson, Manuel Silva, and John Mascarenas. Honorary Pallbearers will be Steve Velarde, Ernie Velarde, Kenny Velarde, Mark Velarde, and David Velarde. Friends may visit French Mortuary, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE, Friday, October 12, 2001, 3:00 p.m. until Rosary.
