Brough -- Howard A. Brough, 80, a resident of Santa Fe passed away early Sunday morning, January 21, 2001, peacefully during sleep at his home of 30 years in Sunlit Hills. Howard was preceded in death by his wife, Madelene Brough, son, Hayden Brough, daughter, Dr. Anne Marie Brough Keller Rense. Howard was born near Colorado Springs, Colorado, the son of Turner Brough and Priscilla Riley. He was proud of his roots, which were Irish and one Native American grandmother. "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" could have been his theme song. He had eyes as blue as the Rocky Mountain skies (or Jack Benny's as he used to say) that twinkled often with kindness and humor. Howard was greatly influenced by his mother who was an Annie Oakley type that settled the west. She was a sharp shooting, no nonsense, single mother of five, who was a consummate hunter and fisherman. Peggy, as she was called, always got her deer and elk, and knew how to butcher it, tan the hide and sew the clothes. Howard married the love of his life, Madelene Elizabeth Driscoll in June, 1940 and they had four children. He was the manager of FW Woolworth stores before and after World War II and was the owner and operator of the Tastee Freez on Cerrillos Road from 1966 to 1986. "The Freez" as it was known was a popular hangout for young and old, especially in the sixties and seventies. It was where Howard got the nickname of "Hoy" from the expression, "Como esta, Hoy". Howard was the embodiment of Tom Brokaw's "The Greatest Generation" with the work ethic and reliability of that time. He loved to tinker, garden, eat desserts, workout and play pool at Quail Run and to hang out with his family. Howard is survived by his son, Harvey Brough and wife, Bonnie of Roswell; grandson, Steve Brough of Austin, TX; daughter, Laurie Brough Farber-Condon and husband, Michael Condon: granddaughters, Aviva Farber and Bridget Condon of Santa Fe; grandson, Hans Brough and wife, Kerri; great grandson, Ahlden of Brisbane, CA; granddaughter, Heidi Brough Lampe and husband, Mark: great-granddaughters, Cypress and Hayden of Chico, CA; grandson, Nathaniel Keller of South Euclid,OH; former son-in-law, Aram Farber of Santa Fe; good friend, Dr. Anita Willett Pais Gomez of Taos, who was like an adopted daughter; many nieces and nephews. Visitation will take place on Thursday, January 25, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. at Berardinelli Family Chapel where a memorial service will take place at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
