ROBERTS -- Daniel Tipton "Tip" Roberts II, a resident of Amarillo, TX, died Wednesday, November 17, 2004. Tip Roberts to all who knew him, was the oldest of seven children born to Daniel T. and Minnie Cole Roberts. The date was November 27, 1895 and the place was Thalia, TX. While he was still a small child, his parents homesteaded on land about thirty-five miles south of Clayton, a small community called Hayden. After finishing the seventh grade in public school, he dropped out to assist his parents on the farm and ranch and caring for his six siblings. Upon reaching manhood, he married Stella Mabel Hauser and they started out on their own. Tip did numerous things including carrying the US Mail, in fact he was the proud owner of one of the first Model T. Fords in the area and "stood tall" as he delivered letters and packages. Later he and his bride settled down to farming and ranching and rearing their family of four children. During the 1930's, the drought and sand storm years, he was forced to seek other means of providing for his family. He first worked for the US Govt. supervising the slaying of cattle that were starving, then later took a job with the US Farm Home Administration and moved to Espanola and later transferred to Raton. He then purchased a Texaco Gasoline Distributorship in Springer, NM which he operated for several years then upgraded to a larger distributorship in Las Vegas, NM. After several years he accepted a political appointment as auditor with the New Mexico Gasoline Tax Division and worked there until his retirement. In 1948 Tip and Stella moved from Las Vegas to Albuquerque. Stella preceded him in death in 1976; and after several years, Tip married a longtime friend and widow, Bessie Gay. She also preceded him in death. He then moved to Lubbock, TX to be with his daughter June Ward. In January 2003, he moved to Amarillo to Ware Memorial Care Center where he could receive twenty-four hour care. Tip was ordained a Deacon at the age of 25 at the Baptist Church in Hayden, NM. Every place he and his family lived they were all active in the Baptist Church, and Tip served as a Deacon. While in Lubbock, his physical condition prevented his attending services and the church voted him "Deacon Emeritus." He was very conscientious about his support of the church and gave a minimum of ten percent until the very last. Two of his children are deceased, Lovell R. King, a lifelong schoolteacher and Daniel T. Roberts III, fighter pilot killed in WWII. DeClue, known as "Joe" to his family and friends, peacefully passed away in his sleep early Wednesday morning, August 4, 2004. Grandpa Joe was born to Joseph and Alice DeClue in winter of 1921 in Herculaneum, MO. During WWII he was initially stationed in Albuquerque, NM before being assigned to the Pacific Theater where he served as an engineer.
